Central Climate Park in Snina
With your voice, you have decided on the appearance of the new Central Climate Park in Snina!
From September 1, 2021, to September 15, 2021, you had the opportunity to vote through distributed ballots, both electronically and physically, on the shape of the future climate park in Snina. After verifying and counting all valid ballots in the number of 733 (electronic 527 and physical 206), the 2nd vote received the most votes, to which you cast a total of 310 votes (electronic 227 and physical 83).
In second place was Draft 3rd with 271 votes (electronic 181 and physical 90), and in third place was Draft 1 with 152 votes (electronic 119 and 33 physical).
Thank you for taking the opportunity to take part in deciding on the design of the new Central Climate Park in Snina, which will not only help mitigate the effects of climate change but will also create a new leisure zone in our city.
Winning - Draft 2.
The presented variant of the proposal is based on existing but also newly proposed points of interest and fully respects the current (living) corridors. This alternative connects the 3 main points of interest. P.O.H. Elementary School, Post Office Snina and the square in the city centre.
These main routes are connected by main roads. In addition, the design also includes sidewalks that serve as additional. These intersect the main corridors and are subordinate to them. Routes are clearly defined by their special width and materials. The individual routes are not linear. They are rounded towards the centre, which draws the visitor deeper into the park in a clever but non-violent way.
Pedestrian corridors divide the park into 8 zones with different functions. The largest, central part is the water surface of the bio pond. The surrounding zones are dedicated to rain gardens with noble greenery throughout the park, sports fields, children’s playgrounds, gallery part, arcade with flower gate, a podium with seating element, relaxation zone with reading room and a new market with public toilets and a cafe. The aim of the proposal is not only to address the climate park but also to create a comprehensive unit for pleasant leisure time.
Where will the future climate park be?
Through the project, we will begin the transformation of the currently unused space (the so-called brownfield) between the market and the primary school of P. O. Hviezdoslav, into a new recreation zone with elements of greenery, water element and small architecture.
The purpose of the park is primarily to improve the local microclimate, reduce the carbon footprint (CO2), increase the resilience of the urban environment to overheating, retain rainwater in the country and prevent it from draining into the sewer.
The submitted proposals and division of the territory are based on the current natural movements and movements through the territory (primary school, secondary schools, offices, post office, civic amenities, square) and also on the expected movements, given the new civic amenities of city importance – urban swimming pool and new premises city library.
The presented proposal and division of the territory is based on the current natural movements and movements through the territory (primary school, secondary schools, offices, post office, civic amenities, square) and also on the expected movements, given the new civic amenities of city importance – urban swimming pool and new premises city library.
The design envisages the creation of the main pedestrian connecting artery, which is accentuated by its width, surface and the spaces and functions created on both sides. The connecting sidewalks to the other entrances to the park are installed perpendicular to this road.
The park is divided into several functions and areas with a focus on various visitors to the park, there are peaceful recreation areas with a pond, active sports areas, children’s areas, exhibition and cultural and social areas. In this way, it tries to ensure the natural variability and usability of the park for the widest groups of inhabitants.
The presented design envisages the creation of the following elements: rain gardens, a stage with a wooden terrace, an exhibition space, a sports area with seating, a children’s playground, water elements – fountain elements of an urban character, a natural lake. The main element of the whole area will be the greenery, which will green the area, cool it and increase the positive climatic parameters.
The draft is redistributed so that it naturally follows the already existing walking routes (abbreviations), and creates the main route that would connect the main road and the parking lot – the centre, this route is currently absent. By inserting a promenade with a shallow stream, we will create such a promenade. This will connect to the urban structure of this place and bring a new function to the affected part.
A water area of this very nature is chosen precisely because the water area used is easy to maintain and does not need a large amount of water. We propose to enrich the water area and small fountains that would create this dynamic area, but at the same time, the water would circulate and cool.
Part of this proposal is a tartan track (200m), which is naturally set in this area and does not disturb the whole concept, the pedestrian roads to which it seamlessly connects. By planting greenery and creating rain gardens, we will create natural scenery and create a space with different nooks and crannies for playing or connecting trees through various elements of small architecture (networks, seating), where citizens would be able to enjoy relaxation.
In one part, it is proposed to create street food and incorporate it again naturally, into the whole design. It includes 3 small “booths” that would be year-round and used not only during the summer but also during Christmas, markets, etc. The design complements the playground, which we propose not as a classic playground, but as a set of other simpler games so that it is interesting, easy to maintain and durable for children.
